The generation of people born between 1997 and the early 2010s are commonly referred to as zoomers. Sometimes also referred to as members of Generation Z or iGen, zoomers were born amidst the rise of the Internet and the proliferation of smart devices.
Because they've never known a world without the Internet, most zoomers are incredibly online and tech-savvy. While the full implications of zoomers' "always online" lifestyles are yet to be felt, sociologists have already noted that zoomers tend to display lower rates of some risky and dangerous behaviors (such as alcohol consumption and teenage pregnancy) but higher rates of depression and other mental health problems.
The word zoomer was originally a play on the word boomer, which is a term used to describe the generation born between 1946 and 1964. Its first recorded use was in a 2016 press release titled Boomers to Zoomers: Passing the Torch to Generation Z!. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced many zoomers to begin regularly using the Zoom video communication app, lending additional meaning and credence to the term zoomer.
