A flyer is a term for when you take a gamble on a person who has high potential. It is commonly used in sports, especially fantasy football (FFB). The term may also be spelled as flier.
In general use, the term often refers to a person who has questionable character traits but could still be redeemed and make a contribution. A flyer could be a troubled teenager, homeless adult, or and addict.
In fantasy sports, the term describes a risky player that has potential but has a downside. The player may be injury prone, lack experience, or be stuck behind a more talented player. A fantasy owner would take a flyer when he drafts someone higher than his ADP or picks up a player from the waiver wire or free agency.
