QUILTBAG

QUILTBAG is an acronym that represents people identifying as Queer, Questioning, Undecided, Intersex, Lesbian, Trans, Two-Spirit, Bisexual, Asexual, Allied, Gay, and/or Gender Queer. The community coined it in 2010 to be more inclusive than the LGBT and LGBTQ acronyms and easier to pronounce.

You will most likely see QUILTBAG on social media, especially during Pride month (June) or in gender identity forums online. It gained popularity in 2011 but never overtook LGBTQ.

What does each letter in QUILTBAG stand for?

• Queer - A person who is transgender or not heterosexual.
• Questioning - A person who is questioning his or her identity.
• Undecided/Unidentified - A person who is undecided about their identity.
• Intersex - A person who was born with several variations in sex characteristics that do not fit in the standard male or female category.
• Lesbian - A homosexual female.
• Transgender - A person who identifies with a gender identity different from his or her sex.
• Transsexual - A person who identifies with a gender identity different from his or her sex and permanently transitions to that gender sex.
• Two-spirit - A person who identifies as having both a masculine and feminine "spirit."
• Bisexual - A person attracted to both males and females.
• Asexual - A person who is not sexually or romantically attracted to anyone or has very little interest in sexual activity.
• Allied - A person who joins together with members in the LGBTTQQIAAP community to help their cause.
• Gay - A homosexual person.
• Gender queer - A person who does not conform to gender distinctions.
