Reach is when a player is drafted too soon in a sports league like the NFL, NBA, or MLB or a fantasy league, such as football, basketball, or baseball. It comes from a person's reach to grab something not close to him.
Players are assigned value by owners and analysts when they enter the draft. These people evaluate the players' ceilings to determine the position that they should be drafted. Some teams reach for players because they value them too highly or because they need a certain position and there's no better player available at that position. The term may also be used as a noun as in, "he was a reach at 23 overall."
