Gamers use DPS as shorthand for "damage per second." MOBA, RTS, and MMORPG players, especially, use this acronym when discussing how much damage a character can deal over a period of time.
High DPS characters can output a lot of damage very quickly. As such, they tend to be a party or team's primary attacker. Ranged DPS characters tend to be a bit squishy, so you'll often see them protected by one or more tanks.
