New World Order
Conspiracy theorists use NWO to refer to the New World Order conspiracy theory. NWO is a fluid, ever-shifting theory that has one constant tenet: that a secret cabal of elites is attempting to establish a totalitarian world government.
The initial versions of the NWO theory became popular in the 1960s and 70s, among anti-government right-wingers and fundamentalist Christians. These groups believed "international bankers" (thinly-veiled code for Jews) and power-hungry politicians were attempting to use post-World War II international institutions and various forms of shadow government to supplant individual nations' governments.
In the 1990s and 2000s, various radio programs and internet bulletin boards helped NWO spread to a larger audience. Along the way, the conspiracy theory shifted to match those audiences' beliefs. NWO has also given rise to many variant theories, such as QAnon.
