As summer draws to a close, American parents get ready to send their kids BTS, or "back to school." Many American stores also run BTS marketing campaigns and sales, offering notebooks, backpacks, pens, pencils, and other school supplies at a discount. These sales usually intensify in the lead-up to Labor Day (the first Monday in September) because, in many parts of America, Labor Day is the last day before the new school year begins.

In other countries, BTS season starts at different times, depending on when the countries' school year starts. For example, in Australia and New Zealand, BTS sales typically begin in February (the end of those countries' summer), while in India, BTS season begins in June.

When you're discussing movies, TV shows, plays, and other performance art, BTS refers to "behind-the-scenes" content. For example, many of the extras included on DVDs and Blu-rays are BTS interviews with a film's cast and creators, talking about how they made the film.

What does behind the scenes mean?

In most cases, fans don't get to see what goes into making their favorite TV shows, movies, and plays. However, some lucky fans get to go behind the scenes - to see the hidden techniques, secrets, and thought processes used to create their fave film, show, or performance. Some fans get to go BTS in person (think those who have backstage passes at a concert), while others have to settle for viewing written or recorded BTS content.

Where is BTS used to mean behind the scenes?

You're most likely to see BTS used to describe behind-the-scenes content on social media and web forums. For example, superfans may use the BTS acronym as they discuss articles about how their favorite show or film was made.

However, as the Kpop band BTS has increased in popularity, social media and forum users have mostly stopped using BTS to mean "behind the scenes" - because the acronym is now so closely linked to the Kpop group.

When you are messaging someone that you will be there soon, send "BTS" to save time. You may text it when meeting up with someone at a physical location, like a restaurant, or message a person online when you are about to join a virtual meeting or gaming match.
