Bop

1. What is a bop in music?

An excellent song or album

A bop is a really good piece of music that, when you hear it, you can't stop yourself from bouncing to the rhythm. The bop may be a singular song or collection of songs, such as an album or playlist.

You may discover bops when listening to music on the radio or streaming service or at a club, bar, or concert. Or a friend or significant other may make a playlist, mixtape, or CD with bops tailored to your taste.

Like all art, bops are subjective. One person's bop may be another person's garbage. But whenever you discover something musical that transforms your body into a dancing machine, you have to share it with the world.

Many people use bop on social media, especially Twitter and TikTok, to declare to the world that they have to listen to what just tickled their ears. Most bops are catchy Pop songs, but they can really be anything that the listener deems great. After all, bops lie in the ears of the beholder.

Example

I just heard a bop on the radio and I can't get it out of my head!

2. What does BOP stand for in online gaming?

Bind on pickup

MMORPG players use BOP to stand for "bind on pickup." Items that BOP are bound to the player who owns them, meaning they can't be sold or traded to other players.

Unlike "bind on equip" (BOE) and "bind on use" (BOU) items, BOP items are bound to a player as soon as the player grabs or receives them. For example, when you buy a BOP item from an in-game NPC, that item is immediately bound to you.

Some games allow players to eventually convert BOP items into in-game currency or other items. For example, in Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV), players who reach level 20 can complete two quests that allow them to convert bound weapons and armor into materia.

3. What is a bop when dating?

A promiscuous person

A "bop" is a person who moves quickly from one romantic partner to another, often without taking relationships too seriously (bopping from one person to the next). The word originally appeared in hip-hop culture in the 2000s, when artists used it to describe someone who was flirty, casual, and always "on the move." By the 2010s and 2020s, the term spread widely on social media, where people used "bop" to refer to anyone who seemed to be dating around or jumping from situationship to situationship.

Today, friends, especially younger people, may use "bop" jokingly when chatting in group texts or reacting to someone's latest dating update. However, some use "bop" as a derogatory term to put down others (mainly females) for having too many romantic partners. This often happens online and is considered "cyberbullying."

Example

didn’t you just go on a date last night?
yeah… and i’ve got another one tonight
wow, okay bop, go off
